Colorado mountain lion hunts are performed from trucks, rangers, and snowmobiles. On a typical day you’ll be driving roads and trails trying to establish where a cat has crossed. Once a track is found the dogs go to work. This is an exciting hunt and harvesting a lion is something you will never forget! Mountain lion hunts are guided by experienced houndsmen and conducted in several units in southeastern and south-central Colorado. The mountain lion season is held in the late fall, winter, and early spring in order to take advantage of the snow. Even though the hounds are able to follow a lion on dry ground, snow is useful in finding a track and judging the size of the lion. Outfitter focuses on harvesting mature toms (males), and refrains from shooting females, small toms or kittens. Traditionally, mountain lion hunts are very challenging and are a very unique style of hunting. Your physical conditioning is imperative. Please come reasonably prepared and in hiking shape. All hunters are required to take and pass a mountain lion identification course before buying a license. This course can be found on the Colorado parks and wildlife website. Upon completing the course, you can print a certificate and purchase an over-the-counter license.
