Are you Looking for the Ultimate Kudu Hunting Experience?

A hunt in African bushveld is perhaps one of the greatest adventures a hunter can undertake and none compare to the majesty of an African kudu. His beautiful grey coat, impressive stripes, distinctive white chevron marking, and most importantly those long spiral horns set him apart from all other antelope species - not to forget his stately bearing that will make your jaw drop.

The kudu is an extremely challenging big game animal to hunt and requires experienced professionals to get them. Hunting for this majestic creature can be either done with bow or rifle, but the preferred style of hunting is stalking. This involves tracking the animal through the bushveld over a period of time until you are close enough to take your shot. It is important that hunters have the necessary knowledge, skills and tools to be successful in their hunt.

It is also important for hunters to understand the behavior of these animals in order to accurately estimate where they will be at any given time. Understanding the terrain, vegetation, and other aspects of nature as well as being aware of the signs left by kudus - including tracks, droppings, and markings - is essential.

Kudus are extremely cautious animals and will often flee at the slightest sound or movement. They can also be very agile and fast, so hunters must be patient and have a lot of knowledge in order to outwit them. Kudus are also nocturnal animals which means that they will only come out of their hiding places when it is dark enough for them to remain unseen by predators such as humans. Therefore, many successful hunters plan their hunt around dusk or dawn so that they can get close enough to take their shot before the kudu has time to react.

The thrill of hunting this majestic animal is like no other, but it requires patience and skill in order to succeed.

The Magnificence of an African Kudu

For many hunters visiting Africa, the top priority is to hunt kudu, a large and graceful antelope that is highly coveted as a trophy. Its long spiral horns are its distinguishing feature and it is considered one of the most beautiful species of antelopes with a pale grey to brownish-grey coat adorned with white vertical stripes on the flank.

Often referred to as the "grey ghost", the kudu is second in popularity only to the impala among plains game. male kudu is easily recognizable by a unique white chevron marking between its eyes. The bulls carry long spiral horns while the females, known as kudu cows, lack horns but have beautiful prominent ears. Both males and females have a conspicuous hump on the shoulder and white underneath their tails. Its most iconic feature, however, are its impressive horns which curl in a graceful spiral shape. This majestic animal has a stately bearing that will captivate any hunter who is lucky enough to experience it.

Hunting for Kudu

Hunting for an African kudu is no easy feat and requires experienced professionals to track and take down one of these elusive creatures. Stalking is the preferred method for hunting kudus as it allows you to get close enough to take your shot without scaring away the animal before you can make your move. It's important to understand the behavior of the kudu in order to successfully hunt them since they are extremely cautious and nocturnal animals that will flee at even the slightest sound or movement. Understanding the terrain, vegetation and other aspects of nature as well as tracking signs such as tracks, droppings and markings also helps hunters increase their success rate when hunting this big game animal.

For the best chance of hunting kudu successfully, it is recommended to do so in bushveld areas that have an abundance of fresh vegetation, including leaves, sprouts, seedpods, and grass.

The kudu is active in the early morning and late afternoon for browsing but rests during the heat of the day. It typically forms family groups of 6 to 12 individuals, mainly consisting of cows and calves, and bulls only join during mating season. The bulls either stay in bachelor herds or become solitary. The kudu is a beautiful and agile animal that can jump very high despite its size. Even with its long horns, it can run quickly through bushes by positioning them along its back. Hunting the kudu can be very tough because it is very cunning and hard to find due to its exceptional senses. To locate one, look for signs around water sources since it needs to drink often. Due to the variation in the horns' curl depth among individual bulls, judging the trophy quality can be challenging.

Kudus with horn lengths in the low 50's are commonly found, while those with 55 inches or longer are considered great trophies. Exceptional Kudus have horn lengths of 60 inches or more. To hunt Kudus, try searching for them in areas where they feed in the early morning and quietly approach them. increase your chances of success while hunting, it's recommended to focus on ambush points during daybreak as the bulls move upward and seek cover. During midday, it's helpful to wait near water sources since the bulls generally drink water around that time. You can also try tracking, if the terrain allows, or attempt still-hunting in dense foliage. In hunting kudu, it is important to use good quality controlled-expansion bullets. It is not recommended to use rifles with less than 7mm or .270 caliber, even if it's your favorite deer rifle. Larger calibers are not essential, it's worth noting that having more firepower is always a good thing. So, while being under-gunned is a possibility, "having too much gun is not".

In successfully hunting kudu, it is important to aim for the high heart/lung area. Avoid shooting in the neck or head, as this can damage the trophy. Aim directly up the foreleg about one-third into the body and squeeze the trigger. This shot will effectively take out the heart's plumbing and prevent the kudu from traveling far. To ensure a successful kill, aim slightly above the midpoint of the kudu's body. If your shot hits much higher than this, you may have to track the animal and could potentially lose it. For the biltong hunter, aim for the area just behind the shoulder to hit the lungs. Hunting kudu can be thrilling and satisfying. Although finding the 50 to 60 inch bulls can be difficult, a 45 to 48 inch set of spiral horns with ivory tips can still make an impressive trophy for display.
